HHS Launches Oil Spill Distress Helpline

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced last Friday the availability of a new toll-free helpline to provide information, support, and counseling for families and children affected by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Part of the Obama Administration's long-term oil spill recovery plan, the Oil Spill Distress Helpline (1-800-985-5990) links callers to behavioral health care services and will serve as an important resource for the localized oil spill outreach efforts in the Gulf Coast states.

6/24/10 Sitrep Report

Catholic Charities USA
While FEMA is not officially responding to the Gulf Coast, an inter-agency team—Deepwater Integrated Services Team—has been put in place in each state (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida) to assess and support the states and regions. These teams are separate from and do not report to the Unified Command. A FEMA Voluntary Agency Liaison (VAL) has been assigned to the team in each state to ensure communication between the states, communities, and community and voluntary organizations. The VALs will also support the delivery of social services, small business assistance, and other public information needs.
