Notes:
We, the Session of St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, are deeply appreciative of the many churches, groups, and individuals who have joined us in reaching out to our community which is so devastated by Hurricane Katrina. If you are among this number, we thank you. The outpouring of love and care has been humbling and makes us proud to be Presbyterian. As people of hope, who belong to the God of hope, we believe that a better day lies ahead for our community.
Even as many of you have sent work teams and financial gifts, and are still doing so, we would presume to ask for your help with another major and growing need: making sure that our federal government delivers on its promise to rebuild New Orleans. The first priority is the construction of new levees able to withstand future storms such as Katrina, and restoration of the buffering wetlands, enormous tasks utterly impossible without major federal assistance. As the months since Katrina roll on with little progress in Washington, we are concerned that Congress not ignore its commitment to our city. There is much work that remains. While our church and surrounding neighborhoods are rebounding impressively, vast portions of our city remain as they were. The only thing that has changed is the absence of water; otherwise it is a picture of indescribable ruin.
You can help by contacting your Congresspersons and Senators and urging them to support legislation making New Orleans safe from future storms. Thank you for your consideration of this important matter, for your wonderful support, and for your prayers.
