We keep a daily journal on our animals, one for cats, one for dogs. Daily duties are listed along with comments, special observations about an animal, newcomers, things that need special attention and general FYI's. The "routines", as we call them, consist, of course, of feeding and cleaning the animals' habitats, but also one-on-one care and attention, and training, such as leash training for the dogs.
As with anything, if you are unfamiliar, or uncomfortable with doing any task asked of you, like dispensing medication, or handling a difficult or scared animal, ask another volunteer to help you and show you the "tricks of the trade".
