As a Disaster Response Team Volunteer, you should be level-headed and able to think clearly under stress. You should also be willing to train and practice disaster response skills as a team to ensure readiness when the team is activated by emergency response officials.

Volunteers may serve in several capacities, including volunteer coordinator, trainer, emergency shelter manager, or emergency shelter staff. Training requirements for volunteer positions range from three to nine hours, depending upon the level of responsibility. Most positions require a commitment to people, as well as animals, and good communication skills. Pets America expects its volunteers to respect cultural diversity, to work collaboratively with other emergency response and animal welfare agencies, and to abide by established health and safety rules put in place to protect volunteers, companion animals, and the public.
