Emergency Food and Shelter Program

The program was established in 1983 with the signing of the “Jobs Stimulus Bill.” Funds are channeled through United Way of America and distributed to states and counties based on average unemployment statistics from the United States Department of Labor for the most current 12-month period available.

The program serves Covington, Jefferson Davis, Marion, Forrest, and Lamar Counties. Perry County is not always a part of the regular funding, but has been funded through State set-aside funds. The funds are used to supplement feeding, shelter, rent/mortgage and utility assistance efforts. A local board whose members represent nonprofit service agencies decides which services will be provided in each county. Eligibility criteria are based on poverty income guidelines without regard to age, race, sex, religion, national origin, or disability.
