The goal of the Temporary Love & Care (TLC) Program is to provide an interim in-home environment for animals that due to their physical or behavioral challenges need special one-on-one care.
TLC families provide in-home temporary care for kittens, puppies, dogs, cats and small caged pets. Some animals may need a temporary home for a few days; others may need a few months. Volunteers who offer thier time, energy and home to animals in need, help to prepare the animals for adoption into permanent homes. The ARL has a need for TLC homes year-round. Occasionally, the ARL also needs short-term care for horses and other barn buddies such as sheep, goats and pigs.
TLC program needs include:
Caring for pregnant animals or those who have given birth and continue to care for them until the litter is at least eight weeks old.
Socialize animals who aren't completely comfortable with humans-typically puppies, kittens and small caged pets, but may apply to adult animals. TLC volunteers who 'socialize' will do so under the guidance of ARL's Pet Behavior Counselors.
Caring for "special cases" that need a quiet, home environment for recovery following surgery, neglect or injury.
Caring for barn buddies (horses, goats, pigs, etc.) that need a special environment, medical care or socialization.
The Animal Rescue League will provide all veterinary care it deems necessary, food, crate, cat litter, etc. TLC volunteers provide time, their homes, and lots of love. Veterinary services provided without prior approval of ARL's Chief Staff Veterinarian is the sole financial responsibility of the TLC volunteer.
The ultimate goal of TLC care is to lead the animal to the best adoption placement possible.
TLC Program Requirements:
TLC volunteers are required to sign a Statement of Understanding with the ARL. The Statement outlines the responsibilities of the TLC participant.
Proof of homeowners/renters insurance is required before TLC caretaker approval is granted. If you rent, permission from the landlord must be received.
A waiver of liability must be signed to exclude the ARL from being responsible for any damage done to personal property by the animal.
A signed animal agreement stating that the ultimate adoption decision is solely the responsibility of the ARL and that the animal(s) will be returned to the ARL when requested by the ARL.
TLC volunteers must be at least 21 years old.
Everyone in the household must be committed to the ARL pets living in their home.
TLC volunteers must be fully committed to fulfilling the length of time the pet needs care.
TLC volunteers must have gone through an ARL volunteer orientation session.
Approval of the home environment by the ARL must have taken place before the first animal arrives.
Completion of training by the ARL Foster Program Chair must have taken place before the first animal arrives.
Completion of TLC Application, Waiver and Contract.
Animals in the TLC program must return to the ARL for adoption unless other arrangements are made through the Executive Director.
