Cleanup, House Gutter, Volunteer needed by Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans

notes: Operation Helping (A Catholic Charities program) brings volunteers from across the country together to gut homes of elderly, disabled, or uninsured victims of Hurricane Katrina. The flooding in the aftermath of the hurricane severely damaged as many as 200,000 homes in the Greater New Orleans area, and gutting these homes is the first step in the road to rebuilding. Catholic Charities provides tools and a worksite supervisor to teams of 15 volunteers, and after about 2.5 days, the house gutting is complete. Through this program, we hope to enable displaced residents to return and rebuild. Accomplishments to Date: 786 residences have been gutted. About 4,000 volunteers have given more than 100,000hours of service. How You Can Help: ~ Volunteer to work with Operation Helping Hands. We provide meals and lodging for out-of-town groups. ~ Become ambassadors for New Orleans in your community. Tell them about Operation Helping Hands and their opportunity to help rebuild. What You’ll Be Doing: House Gutting: Remove salvageable items, appliances, furniture, and other household items from flooded homes; tear out walls, ceilings, and floors of homes and spray homes with bleach to kill mold.
