FITCHBURG — Our Father’s House Inc., a nonprofit shelter dedicated to the homeless population in the region, debuted its new mobile shower trailer unit at a “towel cutting” event on Wednesday morning.

“This is phenomenal for the community,” said Judith Nest-Pasierb, executive director of the shelter. “A shower gives people their dignity back. Respect and dignity, that’s our mission statement.”

The 12-foot shower unit features two easy-to-use showers, fold-up aluminum steps and rails for easy access, lighting, insulated walls and a 300-gallon water tank. The trailer will primarily serve the homeless communities, but could also be used during emergencies or natural disasters.

Director of Homeless Services Kevin MacLean said the shower is an important addition to the area.

“People in the community are saying it’s about time something like this was available,” MacLean said. “There’s a huge need for this in the community.”

The mobile shower will be staged in Fitchburg, Leominster, Gardner, Athol, and Winchendon.

Mayor Stephen DiNatale, who was on site for the ceremony, said he was proud of the efforts being taken to support community members in need.

“We couldn’t be happier about this,” DiNatale said. “It’s a need that has now been met.”

Police Chief Ernest Martineau said showering and access to running water is something many people take for granted. But for the homeless community, a shower can be a luxury.

“There’s a segment of our society that wakes up in the morning and they don’t have a shower available,” Martineau said. “So it’s nice to once again see Fitchburg leading the way with these services.”

The $30,000 unit was paid for in part using funds from the federal CARES Act, which was appropriated by the city to support homelessness services. The remaining cost was covered by donations from local businesses and organizations.

The unit is insulated and has air conditioning so it can be used throughout the year. All it needs is access to electricity and a garden hose, MacLean said.

Volunteers routinely bleach and sanitize the shower stations to ensure health and safety guidelines are met.

Through donations, the site also provides daily meals and clothing to the homeless population and some individuals are being assisted with their laundry.

Nest-Pasierb said the recent purchase has already inspired other communities to purchase their own mobile shower units.

“Worcester and Lowell are now buying one,” she said. “We started a trend and we’re happy about that.”
