When Mark Morell, a member of the Finney County Humane Society, arrived in Greensburg Sunday morning after a tornado struck the town two days before, he started helping pick up dogs ranging from purebred to mutt, cats and whatever other animals he and others could find.
"You had barking dogs. You had dogs that were hiding in the back of the kennel," Morell said of the animals that had been involved in the category F-5 enhanced tornado that hit Greensburg Friday.

Judy Smith hugs her cat Pawsh after finding her Tuesday under her destroyed home in Greensburg.
Some animals acted as though nothing had happened, some "were just petrified," Morell said.
Morell traveled with five other Garden City residents, including Doree Bates, animal control officers Karen Casanova and Travis Bailey and veterinarian David Sells and his wife, Becky, on Sunday morning to Greensburg to help with animal recovery. Morell also went to help on Monday and Tuesday with the group bringing back 17 dogs and about 15 cats.
Six of the dogs temporarily housed in Garden City were returned by Wednesday to their owners. As of Wednesday, three dogs still were being kept in the Finney County Animal Shelter, four dogs in foster homes and four dogs and the cats being housed by Sells.
Morell returned the rest of the dogs today to the Pratt County Humane Society's animal shelter and the site in Greensburg. The cats possibly will be up for adoption, he said.
Cooper, a chocolate lab, was one of the dogs Morell and others returned to his owner, Chance Little, of Greensburg.
Little said he and his family, including his wife and daughter, weren't home when the tornado hit and destroyed the house.
"It's a pile of nothing," Little said.
He said that when he came back to survey the damage and check on Cooper, he found the dog "unscathed," running around in the yard.
But the family and other residents later had to evacuate the town because of weather, so Little said he decided to tie Cooper up in a shaded area, feed him and leave a 5-gallon bucket of water for the dog, hoping someone would find him until Little returned for the dog.
Little said when he went back to find Cooper, he was directed to one of the Kansas Department of Transportation yards at Greensburg where most of the animals are being kept temporarily to help owners locate them.
Little eventually learned Cooper had been taken to Garden City, with Morell and others bringing the dog to Greensburg to reunite Cooper with Little.
Little said Tuesday was the first time the family, including Cooper, had been together since the tornado.
Little said he'd gotten Cooper about 1 1/2 years ago after a stray dog had given birth to puppies under a neighbor's home.
Cooper's "whole body started wiggling when he saw Chance," Morell said. "You could tell Cooper was Chance's dog."
Morell said none of the animals that were located in Greensburg had microchips, which are used for positive, immediate identification of the animal. Morell, whose dogs are microchipped, said the incident reaffirmed his belief that owners should purchase the microchip for their cat or dog.
Alice Bailey, manager for the Pratt County Humane Society and shelter, said she and others arrived at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning to help with the animals. Bailey said that as of Wednesday, about 30 dogs and 25 to 30 cats had not been claimed out of the about 190 animals that had gone through the site.
Bailey said the animals originally were taken to different sites in order to avoid them going through severe weather again. She said the animals were being returned to the Greensburg site and Pratt County Humane Society animal shelter for easier access to owners looking for their pets.
The Pratt County Humane Society is handling care for the animals and locating owners. The Kansas Animal Health Department is assisting with the effort by providing support to Bailey and Pratt County Humane Society, according to Debra Duncan, director for Animal Facilities Inspection within the department.
Duncan said the state's animal response team had been on site at Greensburg since Saturday to help with animal rescue. She said that while Animal Health doesn't currently have a plan to deal with animal rescue during disasters, she hoped to discuss the event and how the animals were helped with other agencies in the hopes of possibly developing a plan for the Animal Health Department.
Bailey said people could contact the Pratt County Humane Society at 1402 W. First St., Pratt, KS 67214 or (316) 672-6777 for help with veterinary bills or information and questions.
Nancy Garhart, president of the Finney County Humane Society, said Orscheln, 2217 W. Jones Ave., and Ward's would take donations for animal recovery. Garhart said donations could include anything from cat litter, food bowls, litter boxes, dog houses, dry pet food and pet collars to money.
Garhart said monetary donations could be sent to the Finney County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2031, Garden City, KS 67846.
For questions or more information on how to help, contact Garhart at the Humane Society at 272-5651 or 275-6364.
