The Food Bank of The Golden Crescent began operating May 16, 1986. Executive Director, Amelia Salinas, while working with a child abuse prevention program, noted that hunger was an underlying problem in most abuse cases. After a ten month feasibility study of gathering information from other Food Banks in Houston, Austin, Corpus Christi, & San Antonio, gaining the support of H.E.B. Grocery Chain, and obtaining permission from Second Harvest National Food Bank Network, Amelia received a donation of a small building and the Food Bank was born.
Today, the Food Bank of The Golden Crescent is the support system for some 100 agencies in a 9,963 square mile service area which includes the eleven counties of Calhoun, Colorado, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Lavaca, Matagorda, Refugio, Wharton, and Victoria. In 2004, the Food Bank distributed over 4.6 million pounds of food and related products to agencies participating in our food distribution program. These agencies report providing over 250,000 meals in 2004 through soup kitchens, emergency food boxes, church pantries, or senior citizens programs. Aside from these programs, the Food Bank has initiated the nationally sponsored Kid's Café program in Texas, which provides an after school hot meal and tutoring for children at risk of hunger. The Community Food Bank also has provided move-in food and related items to 35 families in the Victoria area qualifying for Habitat for Humanity housing.
