LORD IS MY HELP RECEIVES $35,000 GRANT FROM UNITED WAY

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS—The Lord Is My Help, a non-profit
organization specializing in providing meals to those in
need, has been awarded a $35,000 grant from the United Way.
This money will pay for 16, 000 additional meals.

Sonia Cowart, the Centers Private Sector Involvement
Coordinator, said Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran first
notified her of the Phase 25 Emergency Food and Shelter
Program funded by the United Way. We would never have found
that money on our own. I'm so thankful that Mayor Moran
thought of us when she learned of it, said Cowart.

The Lord Is My Help provides 55,000 meals a year to needy
residents. They are open every day for lunch for anyone who
has no money for a meal elsewhere. Most meals, however, do not
stay on the property. Instead, they are delivered to people
who cannot leave their homes because of age or illness.

Until now the Center has relied largely on private donations.
They get $1,500 yearly from Jackson County and some USDA federal
surplus food, but the vast majority of funding comes straight from
the citizens of Ocean Springs.

Cowart hopes the grant will be awarded annually, enabling the
service to expand and provide even more meals to needy
residents.

Mayor Moran says she was more than happy to help. The Lord Is My
Help provides a vital service that reflects well on our community
commitment to help those in need. My hat goes off to the many
volunteers that make thatorganization so effective. I am delighted
they were awarded this significant grant from United Way.
