A RED FLAG WARNING FOR HIGH WINDS AND LOW HUMIDITY IS IN EFFECT TODAY, NOVEMBER 24, UNTIL AT LEAST 3:00 PM. PLEASE REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT IMMEDIATELY. MOUNTAIN AREAS WILL HAVE WINDS 24-45 MPH, WITH GUSTS TO 70 MPH. THE VALLEYS WILL HAVE WINDS 20-40, GUSTING TO 60 MPH. COASTAL AREAS WILL HAVE WINDS 20-35, GUSTING TO 40 MPH. RELATIVE HUMIDITIES WILL BE IN THE SINGLE DIGITS, BUT THE COUNTY SHOULD HAVE COOLER TEMPERATURES THAN WE EXPERIENCED DURING THE OCTOBER WIND EVENT. "We’re preparing right now and we want the public to be prepared as well," said Fire Chief Bob Roper. "Our Wildfire Action Plan was designed to inform the public on how to prepare themselves and their property for a wildfire.” A copy of the Wildfire Action Plan can be downloaded from the department’s Web site (http://fire.countyofventura.org). Both the Ventura County Fire Department and CalFire have augmented staffing in response to the anticipated winds. “We’re overstaffing to have personnel and equipment ready,” said Roper, “and the State is going to a maximum advance deployment of all firefighting resources including air attack.” A CalFire staging area is now fully operational at Freedom Park in Camarillo. The camp is hosting about 800 firefighting and support personnel and their equipment, including 25 fire engines, 6 bulldozers and 15 hand-crew strike teams. “There is still time before the winds arrive for residents to prepare,” said Roper. “We need every edge we can get under Santa Ana wind conditions, so we’re hoping property-owners will provide us with a defensible space around their homes.” --------------- Disaster Client Assistance Responding to disasters and meeting the needs of those impacted by events such as fires, flood, and earthquakes is the first priority at the American Red Cross.
