notes: The Surf City Animal Response Team (SCART) officially became a non-profit corporation at the end of 2005; however, the members began working toward this goal in 2004. The founding members have worked many hours to research and put together information so that you, your family, and your neighborhood can be prepared to care for your pets before, during, and after a disaster or crisis. As you should know, in California the most prevalent disasters are earthquakes, fires, and floods. Do not forget, at the very least, to have food, water, and kennels for each pet for two weeks. This will allow you, your family, and neighborhood to be better prepared and to avoid the devastating results with the abandoned and stray animals that occurred in Louisiana and Mississippi after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. SCART was founded by a group of animal-loving citizens dedicated to the goal that all pets, whether they have fur, feathers, scales, shells, whatever, are taken care of and saved from the horrors of being abandoned or left behind after a disaster or crisis. They have also pledged their assistance to help animals in need during these trying times. Since SCART is non-profit, its members are all volunteers and it is dependent on donations of funds and supplies in order to fulfill the purposes for which it was established (see the Mission Statement). This team was created to be open to all those interested in becoming animal responders in a disaster. We include therapy-trained dogs and crisis-trained dogs as part of our team. We offer training from experienced team members as well as from outside animal organizations. The members who produced this information used their research, experience, and training. Some of this training and experience consists of Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) and Emergency Animal Sheltering (EAS) from the Humane Society of the United States; Pet First Aid/CPR; training with Delta Society in animal-assisted therapy; training with HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response; training in sheltering, first aid/CPR, search and rescue, hazard mitigation, communications, the Incident Command System, and the National Incident Management System through their local Community Emergency Response Team organizations; Red Cross training; participation in disaster drills, volunteering at the Lamar-Dixon pet shelter in Louisiana, and rescuing animals with the Louisiana SPCA after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
