The Home Depot Foundation
This group has invested millions of dollars in communities across the country to, "help our neighbors of modest means live in homes they can afford to own and maintain in the long term, that provide safe, healthy environments and conserve energy, water and other natural resources."
Affordable Housing Program:
"The Home Depot Foundation defines an affordable home as one that people of limited means can afford to own, operate and maintain over the long-term. We consider not just the initial purchase price of a home, but whether the owner can afford the monthly mortgage payment, utility costs, transportation expense and up-keep. We believe that by helping families and individuals secure dependable, healthy, affordable housing, we are increasing their chances of success in all areas of their lives and are creating stable, strong communities."
The discussion on their website goes into detail about the importance of green building, with a list of goals for the program. The comprehensive approach includes consideration of "greening" to help renters and property managers.
