UPDATE 6/11/08 LTel:
VERY URGENT NEED FOR BOTTLED WATER
Received a call from Stacy Magoffin, Harris Fire LTR Coordinator/CERT Director for the Harris Fire Region.
Twenty families are still without water since the 10/07 SoCal Wildfires. The LTRC has been supplying them with bottled water, but they are currently 100% out.
Referred Stacy to Trader Joe's as they were very generous during the Wildfires and am contacting Shlene Boundy to coordinate water relief. Will also be contacting other org's for resources to assist (myself).
Most of these families are under the poverty line, underinsured or not insured for their wells. The average cost of repair is $10-$12,000. These folks don't qualify for SBA loans (only 6 qualified in this entire region for SBA loans).
10 rebuilds are currently awaiting approval, and 1-2 cases are getting ready to go to the Unmet Needs Committee shortly. The LTR is thrilled about this progress.
Sheds are a big need to secure tools/equipment on burned out properties. Looters are stealing from the residents. They also need volunteers to assist in putting up the shed kits.
============================================================================
The Harris Fire Long-Term Recovery Center was formed after the Harris fire by volunteers from the following communities: Potrero/Tecate, Barrett Junction/Dulzura, and Deerhorn Valley. The goal of our new recovery center is to connect fire survivors with donations and services that are available and to act as a conduit for recovery information, emergency preparedness and rebuilding issues. Long-term recovery requires that we combine efforts to better serve our communities.
If you or someone you know have been affected by the fire and are in need of further assistance, please contact us. We want our resources to reach everyone who needs or wants them that has been affected by the Harris Fire.

Thu Jun 12 02:33:10 +0000 2008 by LTel:cat_notes: 6/11/08 LTel Update from Stacy Magoffin:
Stacy has been digging into her own personal pocket to supply these financially poor families and has exausted resources. Grants take a long time. The need is NOW.
I will be contacting World Vision, Save The Children and Operation Blessing to see if they can at least stock the LTR up for a month.
She say's these people can't even shower and come into the LTR stinking badly. This can't be healthy for children or adults to be in this situation long term like this.
I'm also looking into an alternative to purchasing shed kits from Home Depot. Many residents are in desperate need of sheds because looters are coming to their property and stealing their tools and equipment they are using to clear their land in preparation for rebuilding. I am going to be contacting the shed company that came out and built one for my family. It was less than $500 for a 5x8 metal shed on a foundation and that included the install. It's possible that this company may give a discount. -> 6/11/08 LTel 2nd Update:
Spoke with Phyllis Freeman of World Vision. She was in fact orchestrating a second delivery of food (Since 3/08) with Brenda Wise, so they will put 2-3 pallets of water on the truck in addition to the food. I'm putting Stacy, Brenda and Phyllis in contact with each other 6/12/08.
I detailed the challenge of the well repairs, advising the water is strictly a temporary fix. She let me know that the Full Gospel Missionary Baptist Church in Algiers, LA is interested in doing a sponsorship of a "fire impacted church". I'm going to see if the Harris Fire Region LTRC has any members that are churches to see if we could make it work that way (and get at least one family covered for repairs). Stacy would case manage to choose which family needs it the most.
This is GOOD!
