notes: (FROM THE WEBSITE 7/4/08) Flood Relief Dear friends in Christ, Our neighbors, and many we do not know personally, have been affected by the recent flooding in Columbus. Through this website we want to keep you informed with the relief efforts AND to encourage your volunteerism in assisting these individuals and families... In order to assist those affected by the devastating flood this past week, the congregation of First United Methodist church will be reaching out to those in need. We will focus on collection of non-perishable food items for Love Chapel, monetary donations made out to FUMC with Love Chapel or Red Cross in memo. Also, liquid landry soap, and large plastic totes with lids to be distributed to Love Chapel and San Souci. Donations may be placed in boxes at the office entrance to the church just off the main parking lot. For questions call the church office at 372-2851. We will also be organizing groups to help with clean-up at the homes of church families. If you are in need or know of an FUMC family affected by the flood that has not been contacted by a church staff member, please call the church office. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Staff, pastors or other church members have been in touch with all affected to make sure they were safe and in some cases, work teams gave hands on help. Your donations of food and cleaning supplies have been delivered to appropriate agencies. Hundreds of lunches and hot meals have been delivered daily to homes of church members, neighbors and others in need. Starting next week, lunches will be provided upon request when there is a scheduled day for volunteers. Call the church office (372-2851) at least 24 hours in advance to arrange. THANK YOU to the many who have already donated money, cleaned, shoveled, consoled, baked, delivered and supported their friends and neighbors in countless ways. As the weeks and months pass, there will be many opportunities for members to continue help. Please call the church office (372-2851) if you would like to be added to the list of volunteers. If you have already called but not heard back, please be patient. Many families do not quite know what they need at this time. Most are waiting for damage to dry out to see how extensive repairs will be. RIGHT NOW you can also do the following: -Continue to pray for our community. On Sunday, a list of those directly affected by the flood will be in the bulletin so that you can pray for each individual family -Help anyone you can, any way you can! This IS the time to keep in touch with those you know were affected! -Donate $ to Love Chapel or Red Cross (directly or payable to FUMC) -Drop off a new toy at the church for someone who lost theirs in the flood (Shower of Toys) -Donate blood. -Drop off non-perishable foods or cleaning supplies to the church or Love Chapel. Rebuilding Columbus One Meal at a Time Local restaurants are coming together to raise funds for flood victims. The following restaurants are donating proceeds from meals to the Ecumenical Assembly and the funds will be used 100% for building supplies for uninsured flood victims. PLEASE patronize these restaurants and help your community rebuild. Sunday, July 6- Baby Back Blues - all day Additional opportunites will be provided as they become available. If you or someone you know are scheduling a volunteer work day to repair flood damage, sack lunches will be provided for the work crew. Call the church office 24 hours in advance to arrange.
