The remaining shelter sites are Schriever Recreation Center and Dumas Auditorium. The remaining evacuees are primarily those individuals whose homes were severely damaged by the storms and will need to seek more long term housing. HOUMA -- The American Red Cross will be opening at least one shelter in Terrebonne, hopefully tomorrow, officials said.
The shelter will be at Dumas Auditorium, officials said at a press conference this afternoon.
Ashlee Gunter, program manager for the Bayou parishes, explained about the program.
“It’s going to be a safe place for people to stay,” Gunter said. “We’ll feed them three meals a day.”
But she cautioned that people should stay with family if possible. “We encourage them to use that option and use shelters as a last resort.”
While it’ll be safe, it won’t be the lap of luxury, Gunter said. People should bring changes of clothes, bedding, and emergency supplies like medications, formula, and diapers.
The buildings have some generator power for lights, but workers are doing their best to get the capacity necessary to run air conditioning, Gunter said.
