notes: The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health sent teams of crisis counselors today to assist victims of the Sylmar brush fire. Mental health counselors were deployed to three of the four established evacuation centers -- Sylmar and San Fernando high schools, as well as John F. Kennedy High School in Granada Hills, according to DMH spokesman Ken Kondo. "Right now, they're counseling people who've lost their homes. It's been devastating loss," Kondo said, noting that at least 500 residences had been lost. "The most important thing is for them to talk about it," he said. "Our counselors are there to listen (and) to talk about how to recover from this, how to start to set goals and how to make plans." He said counselors will stress the importance of "really relying on friends and family for emotional support, as well."
