Victorian Bushfires – January/February 2009
The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment is available to those people who have been adversely affected by the Victorian bushfires that started during the period 29 January 2009 to February 2009 and continued in February 2009.
Funeral/memorial and related costs assistance of up to $5,000 is available to the immediate family member of an Australian who has died as a result of the January/February 2009 Victorian bushfires. This assistance is to support families with a funeral or memorial and related costs.

Victorian Bushfires - January/February 2009
Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment
The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment is available to those people who have been adversely affected by the bushfires in the State of Victoria that started and continued during the period 29 January 2009 to February 2009.
The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment rate is $1000 per eligible adult and $400 per child. Claims for this assistance can be lodged with Centrelink until 8 August 2009.
Eligibility for Assistance
A person is eligible for this assistance if, as a direct result of the disaster:
they have been seriously injured,
their principal place of residence has been destroyed or has sustained major damage, or
they were unable to return to their principal place of residence for a period of 24 hours or more, or
the person is an immediate family member of an Australian killed, and is the first immediate family member to make a claim for the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment.
Seriously Injured
A person is seriously injured if, as a direct result of this disaster, the person has sustained an injury and was admitted to hospital. The person is also eligible, if under normal circumstances, they would have required admittance to hospital.
Destroyed
A principal place of residence has been destroyed if, as a direct result of the disaster, it was destroyed or has been damaged to the extent that it must be demolished.
Major Damage
A principal place of residence has suffered major damage when, as a direct result of the disaster:
at least one quarter of the residence has been damaged,
the residence has experienced
sewerage failure for a period of 24 hours or more, or
sewerage contamination, or
the residence has been declared structurally unsound as supported by evidence.
Death of an Australian
An immediate family member of an Australian killed as a direst result of the disaster will be eligible for the payment. The person will be regarded as the immediate family member if the person in relation to the deceased was;
the deceased person’s partner,
the deceased person’s natural child, adoptive child or stepchild,
the deceased person’s natural parent, adoptive parent or step parent,
the deceased person’s legal guardian, or
the deceased person’s brother, sister, stepbrother or stepsister.
Assistance will be provided to only one immediate family member of a deceased Australian killed as a direct result of the disaster.
Unable to return
Unable to return means that the person could not return to their principal place of residence for a period of 24 hours or more as supported by evidence.
Funeral/Memorial
Funeral/memorial and related costs assistance is available to the immediate family member of an Australian who has died as a result of the January/February 2009 Victorian bushfires.
This assistance will cover a funeral or memorial and related costs up to $5,000 to the person who has paid or will pay for the funeral/memorial and related costs (where, at the time the claim is made, the costs are not being met by a third party such as an insurance company).

Australian Government Assistance for those affected by the Victorian bushfires

Some two hundred Centrelink workers are today arriving in the thirteen relief centres established around Victoria. They will provide counselling and support as well as help people affected by the fires to access financial assistance.
Two hundred Defence personnel have been assembled to provide specialist and emergency support, including clearing roads, searching houses and erecting tents.
The Australian Government will use all available resources to support the Victorian Government and the families affected by this terrible disaster.
We are working closely with the Victorian Government and will continue to provide support and assistance.
The Australian Government is currently providing the following assistance to people affected by the fires:
The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) has been activated, with payments available to those people adversely affected by the fires. It is $1,000 for eligible adults and an extra $400 per child.
The Australian Government is putting together a jobs and medium-term income support package to assist those whose workplaces have been destroyed by the fires, or whose businesses/employers no longer have an income.
Funeral Assistance will be provided to the immediate family of a person who has lost their life as a direct result of the fires. This assistance will be up to $5,000 and paid to a family for each deceased person.
Centrelink workers are today arriving in the relief/recovery centres established around Victoria. They will provide counselling and support as well as helping people affected by the fires to access financial assistance. Two hundred Centrelink community recovery staff and 70 social workers will be at the centres over the coming days.
The Commonwealth Disaster Plan has been activated, with the Defence Force providing tents, stretchers and sleeping bags to accommodate 200 people at the Yea Recreation Reserve, in North East Victoria.
Twelve Army bulldozers and support crews have been deployed to help build containment lines near Yea in north-east Victoria.
Hundreds of portable beds, mattresses and tents have been provided to relief centres in the Shire of Murrindindi for emergency workers.
Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangement (NDRRA) has been activated. Through the NDRRA, emergency personal hardship grants are available, worth $427 per adult and $213 per child. Temporary living and re-establishment grants worth up to $8,650 can also be accessed.
The Australian Government and Victorian Government have established a $10 million Community Recovery Fund to assist the recovery effort in affected communities. The Fund will cover the restoration of community infrastructure damaged or destroyed in the fires, above and beyond the replacement of essential public assets, as well as funding economic development measures and community restoration activities.
The Australian and Victorian Governments have donated $4 million to the Victorian Bushfire Relief Fund.
North Queensland Floods - January/February 2009
The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment is available to those people who have been adversely affected by the flooding that occurred as a result of the rain depression caused by Tropical Cyclone Ellie which commenced on 31 January 2009 and affected the Far North and Northern regions of Queensland.

Mumbai Crisis – November 2008
The Australian Government is providing support to Australians adversely affected by the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India through the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) and support from Centrelink Family Support Team social workers.
The AGDRP provides a one-off payment of $1,000 per eligible adult and $400 per child to assist people who have suffered serious injury or psychological trauma as a direct result of the terrorist attacks that began on 26 November 2008 in the south Mumbai area.
Funeral/memorial and related costs assistance of up to $5,000 is available to the immediate family member of an Australian who has died as a result of the 26 November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. This assistance is to support families with a funeral or memorial and related costs.

Assistance for medical treatment and counselling
