February 4, 2010 Update Earthquake Recovery in Haiti
Thank you for your love gifts and prayers for the people of Haiti in the midst of the most devastating disaster to occur in the Caribbean region for more than 200 years. These are among the many reasons we have to thank God for His protection and provision:
•Not a single child or adult on the CHO compound was killed or seriously injured.
•Supplies were low after the quake, but the children never went a day without food.
•A 24/7 security plan is functioning well; the walls are intact except for one small area.
•Deliveries of fuel for the generator are in place, so they have power to pump water.
•Sufficient food is now on hand; a plan to ensure a regular supply is being arranged.
One of our board members who spent a week in Haiti reports that for blocks in every direction outside our compound, almost everything is destroyed. CHO is like a beacon of hope in the midst of much devastation. Activity on the compound is quite orderly as everyone settles in to a “new normal” for the next several months. The children are sleeping in tents, and hundreds of local people have erected a tent city at the back of the property.
Years ago, CHO Founder Eleanor Workman established the routine of a 5:00 a.m. prayer meeting to begin each day. Since the earthquake, attendance at early morning prayer time varies from 300 to 500 people. Hundreds also are attending the regular Sunday and mid-week services being held outside the church.
The immediate needs at the orphanage are being met; now we must have the buildings evaluated by engineers to determine the extent of damage. The government warns that because another quake is predicted, the buildings should not yet be reoccupied. Please continue to pray for us as we move forward to create a master plan to ensure that the ministry will be stronger and more effective in the future.

(Jan 29) One of our board members who is now on the Mariani compound in Haiti reports today that conditions are stable, and there are no injuries or illnesses among the children. The food supply is sufficient, and they are being well cared for by staff members and one missionary. Everyone is still staying in tents on the compound for safety purposes, because aftershocks are continuing. When these occur, the children become terribly frightened, so please pray for them.
There is a tent city of refugees on the compound, but their area is separate from the area where the children are sleeping. Food and water is being delivered to them by various relief agencies. With the help of volunteer doctors, the CHO clinic sees up to 150 patients a day.
-----------------------------------
(Jan 26) God never fails to amaze me with His faithfulness. In the middle of disaster His promises become even more apparent. We have a good supply of food and water at CHO Mariani. We have children who are well, in shock, but well. We have Mom to look to as an example of integrity and compassion. We have the help of many friends from various countries, many whom we only became acquainted with since January 12th.
-----------------------------------
(Jan 23) The military left behind supplies for the community. We are so thankful.
------------------------------------
Newsflash!
We were informed that the military is now at the orphanage with supplies. They are using CHO as the distribution center for the town.
(Jan 21) Thank God for His faithfulness! We learned late yesterday that some wonderful friends with Christian Haitian Ministries went to the orphanage with water, rice, beans, spaghetti and oil. What a tremendous blessing.
------------------------------------
(Jan 20) I spoke with Dr. Franco this morning. The aftershock this morning produced panic. We are told that the children have food and water for today. The generator is functional but getting fuel for it is a problem. When the generator is running they have power and they are able to pump water. We continue our effort to get funds, food, water and medical supplies to them.
--------------------------------
(Jan 19) We are informed that two days supply of food and water was acquired yesterday. The children had a meal yesterday and they will have a meal today. We will very likely be able to get food to them today or tomorrow.
--------------------------------
(Jan 17) We have been in contact by telephone with Pastor Jometre. They need food desperately. We are working to get supplies to them at this time. In addition to the children and workers there are many townspeople on the compound.
---------------------------------
Dr. Franco is at the orphanage in Haiti. He has reported that the children are all fine. Mom Workman is home in Miami. A portion of the second level of the school collapsed but thankfully no one was injured. The children are sleeping in tents in the courtyard. Many of the townspeople are seeking safety within our walls as well. We are so grateful that God continues to bless us to be a blessing even in this devastation. The food and water supply has been exhausted. I was told that today, Saturday, Jan 16th they had a generator started. We do not know if they were able to keep it going or to get enough water while it was going. We are exploring every possible option for getting supplies in, but the problem of secure transportation becomes an issue. We have heard that some local merchants are open with rationed food and water, but nothing to help a group as large as ours. We will continue to update this information as we hear more. Please continue to pray for CHO and the nation of Haiti.
