Quick Facts on Disability in Haiti * Disabled children in Haiti are far more likely to die before age 5. * Cerebral palsy and autism are two of the most common disabilites in Haiti. * Disabilities in Haiti are often perceived as spiritual in nature, not medical. Because disability is seen to be caused by a curse or bad behavior, special-needs children are often isolated or ostracized. * There are virtually no government or social rehabilitation services for the disabled in rural Haiti. How You Can Help Become a Sponsor For only $300 a month, we can provide loving, round-the-clock care for one of the children in the Miriam Center. This is made possible by sponsorships from people like you. When they laugh and play, it is because someone cared enough to provide care for them that no one else could. You can show Christ’s love to one of these children through a full or partial sponsorship. You will receive photos and updates throughout the year, as well as special opportunities to communicate with and bless the child. Sponsors are also welcome to come on mission trips and have the opportunity to meet the children and visit the Miriam Center.

For those who dont personally know Joshua I will give you a brief history regarding the circumstances in which we began caring for him and the general backround regarding his life prior to coming to Sacred Heart Hospital. Joshua is a name he was given upon initial admit to our hospital; his real name given by his mother is unknown. Joshua was found by our nurses as they walked to work over 1mo ago. The condition he was found in was critical; he required medical attention immediately. He was severely malnourished, dehydrated, frothing @ the mouth, exposed to 95+ heat levels with no protection and found to have mult skin wounds and bruising over much of his body. To note, Joshua has cerebral palsy; he is UA to functionally utilyze bilateral lower extremities second inc neurological tone and structural deformity, confined to a wheelchair and is unable to speak. At that time the nurses informed the mother of the immediate need for medical attention and she agreed with much encouragment to allow him to receive medical care. The nurses involved in his care have provided information directly from the mother regarding exploitation of this child for money, her neglect physically and emotionally; comparing him to a "dog that means nothing to her". I have met this mother myself and am quite certain that on the 2 occasions I have interacted with her that she was intoxicated with drugs/alcohol-confused, incoherent, speech slurred. All medical professionals involved in this boys care agree that discharge back into this mothers care would be detrimental to his health and life. Joshua needs a "home" in which his special needs can be appropriately managed, and where he can be loved. This boy did not even know how to give/receive affection when he first came to us, we had to teach him about hugs/kisses/love. He is an absolute joy. Joshua in the short time we have known him has captured our hearts and touched our lives. I personally have been trying to find an alternate home for this boy over the last month. I have been unsuccessful and UNICEF has refused to intervene secondary to the mothers involvement. Im eager to speak with those involved in child welfare on the ground in Haiti (Madame Chenet) and thank Jean Owen from Mercy and Sharing for her time and attention to this matter.
