Mission: Established in 1993, Muslim Hands is an international NGO working in over forty countries worldwide to help those affected by natural disasters, conflict and poverty.

We are a UK Registered Charity (No. 1105056) and a signatory to the Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Muslim Hands' trustees, who are all volunteers, form the governing body of Muslim Hands and are legally responsible for all of the organisation's activities under the Charities Act.

FROM THE SITE:

Weeks in, over 20 million people have been affected by the Pakistan floods with 6 million of those seeing no humanitarian assistance whatsoever.

Nearly 6 million people are left displaced and abandoned as their homes have collapsed or swept away in landslides. Rivers across North West Pakistan simply could not bear the colossal toll of the monsoon rains and many burst their banks.

MH has a team of 348 staff and hundreds of volunteers working through the affected regions of Khaybar Pakhtunkhwa, South Punjab, Sind, Muzaffarabad and Kashmir.

The greatest need at the moment remains for a constant supply of food- both cooked, fresh food as well as family food parcels containing staple food items.

Our Emergency Relief Coordinator- Irfan Khan- is travelling across the country to upscale the already extensive aid efforts of our 6 permanent field offices in Pakistan.

Here, he outlines the most urgent needs according to what he has witnessed first-hand on the ground:
Food
The main priority is and remains providing food.

MH is focusing on providing cooked and family food parcels to as many of the affected people as possible- all of whom insist on keeping their fast despite their desperate conditions.

Millions of people who have had their homes, crops and livestock washed away have no way to access a supply of food for themselves and their families. Hungry flood survivors are now facing the threat of malnutrition causing weakened defences against infections.
Medical camps

MH is establishing medical camps in areas where most people have gathered. The few functioning hospitals of Muzzafarabad are too far for many survivors to reach. Those worst affected are people living close to the river banks as their homes, crop and livestock have been destroyed.

Water-borne infections

The number of people with water-borne infections is steadily on the rise. There have been outbreaks of cholera reported and an alarmingly high rate of diarrhoea, especially amongst children. Doctors at the MH medical camps are also frequently seeing snake bite cases.

This is because the flood has moved snakes to areas which are now overcrowded with displaced people. MH medical teams desperately need support to set up more camps where we can provide basic medication.

Mobile medical clinics

There is HUGE DEMAND for mobile medical clinics, since it is near impossible to set up medical camps in many parts of the affected zones. Mobile clinics also ensures that people in remote areas are given medical attention.

MH currently runs 5 mobile medical clinics but we need at least 10 more. Each vehicle costs £6000 and has a running cost of £2000 a month. Each clinic can treat up to 500 people per day.

Shelter

Shelter is a pressing priority and certain areas of Baluchistan, Punjab, Khaybar Pakhtunkhwa and now insha’Allah Neelam Valley too will be provided with family tents as the vast majority of people are still sleeping outdoors with no protection from the weather or insects and snakes.
