TEAM PGI is comprised of a multi-talented group of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. The team is led by the three founding members, Matt Smith, Gavin Garrison, and Heather Rally. Garrison and Rally were both studying for their masters degrees in California before forming Project Gulf Impact, they have since taken a leave of absence in order to continue their work in the Gulf. Matt Smith has stepped away from his work in Hollywood to devote himself full-time to PGI.
Project Gulf Impact is documenting the BP environmental crisis and bringing the tragic consequences of this disaster to the attention of our nation. Utilizing social media, PGI was the first to report events that major media ignored: the spraying of dispersants over residential communities under cover of night; the skin sores being experienced by residents and workers from exposure to oil and chemicals; they were the first to post online videos concerning the lack of and need for respirators and protective gear for VOO workers; and they were the first to the Gulf to provide clear, technically-advanced citizen reporting. Team PGI delivers the high-quality footage that network news producers refuse, are unwilling, or unable to publish and air.
We will investigate, report and document the continuous impacts on the fragile coastal ecosystem, and the adverse health effects of the oil and dispersants. Specifically, we will examine the lack of proper evaluations and resulting misinformation as to the true impacts of the oil release. For example, the EPA is testing for refined petroleum products and as a consequence of testing for refined products instead of crude oil, the EPA is reporting there are little or no petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants in the water and sediments in their test areas. We came right behind the EPA, conducted our own analyses, using the correct test methods for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons, and found a stunning 8 ppm concentration of oil in near coastal waters! We are monitoring the inadequate “sensory” testing of seafood taken from impacted waters, and the concerns of Gulf Coast fishermen that the seafood is unsafe for eating. We will provide our monitoring results, like these, to our coastal community leaders and EPA so that reliable and correct information is obtained. There are multiple issues forthcoming, of principle concern to us, the threat to human health. Finally, global audiences finally have a lens with which the ongoing human health atrocities in the Gulf can be examined. With our personnel, equipment, experience, skills, and knowledge, we will address health and more through social media, citizen reporting, and in-depth investigation. We will organize community health clinics, and finally shed light on the macro regulatory processes that have failed the human population in the Gulf of Mexico.
We believe that by monitoring both government and BP actions through video documentation and social media, we will provide the best information upon which our nation’s leaders can make decisions in response to this disaster. Our driving principle is to combat the severe injustice that is being dealt to residents who have been broadsided by corporate interests.
