Le Petite-Riviere Health Center
Located in rural Petite-Riviere, the center provides medical care and dispenses medications free of charge to rural villagers who lacked access to basic health care services. The center is staffed full-time by a nurse, Midlene Boudeau, nursing assistant, Florencia Dort, community health worker, Valder Labady and interpreter/medical assistant, John Pele Charite. Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, dentists, psychologists and other staff rotate through the center for 1-2 weeks every 2-4 weeks. The clinic currently serves about 600 patients a month.

Sante Timoun is a children wellness program that provides nutritional, medical and psychological support to malnourished children who have lost parents during the earthquake and other children who are at risk of developing malnutrition. Their families receive seeds and training on raised bed gardening technique to grow healthy vegetables to combat malnutrition.

Kiskeya Aqua Ferme, is a 10 acre organic farm located in rural Petite-Riviere, Leogane. It is legally registered in Haiti as a social business. Its mission is to create wealth, provide job opportunities in rural Leogane, reduce poverty and rural migration while contributing to Haiti’s food security. Once profitable, Kiskeya Aqua Ferme will help sustain the Petite-Riviere Health Center which is located on the farm. After the earthquake, the farm sustained heavy damage and seeking donations, grants or loans to help it recover. “In charity, a dollar only has one life. Rasin Foundation is looking for additional physicians, physician assistants or nurse practitioner to join our medical mission from July 22 to August 12, 2011 in Petite-Riviere in Leogane. We will be seeing about 300 patients per week delivering outpatient medical care, treatments and medication free of charge. We are also in need on blood pressure, acid reflux and iron tablets. Please let us know if you have surplus that you can share.

Leogane is coastal town located 29 km west of Port-Au-Prince, the Haitian capital. It had an estimated population of 150,000-180,000 people. It is divided into 13 communal sections of which Petite-Riviere is the second section with a population of 17,000. Eighty percent of the population lives below poverty level. Sugar cane, banana, mangoes are the major cultivated crops. However, most of the farming is for family subsistence. Leogane lacks all the basic services that the population requires.
Leogane was at the epicenter of the catastrophic earthquake of January 12, 2010 and is 90% destroyed. An estimated 30,000 people have died. Opening the small health center in Petite-Riviere was deemed to be a ” miracle” by the villagers. They now have access to basic health care by a dedicated group of health care providers and have access to medications to treat their illnesses without worrying about their ability to pay.
