A one-stop information and resource center to help residents and businesses affected by the Waldo Canyon fire has been set up by El Paso County officials on the west edge of downtown Colorado Springs.
The El Paso County Disaster Recovery Center is designed as a central location to answer questions and provide assistance on filing insurance claims, rebuilding homes, receiving grief counseling and the like. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily beginning Saturday, and will remain open as needed over the next several weeks, except for closing July 4, said county spokesman Dave Rose.
The center has been set up in the former El Paso County Department of Human Services building at 105 N. Spruce St.; the building is just west of Interstate 25, between Bijou and Kiowa streets.
The building will be manned by representatives of several county and other governmental agencies, area nonprofits and private insurance companies, among others, Rose said. Deputy County Administrator Monnie Gore has been named operations director for the facility.
The center is patterned after those operated by the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, Rose said. Many people will have multiple questions about their situation, he said. If they want to repair their home, what kind of permits will they need? If they want to rebuild on the site, are rental properties and temporary housing available? For businesses, what kind of local, state or federal aid programs might be available?
The center is designed to help them get answers without a lot of running around, Rose said.
“What the state has told us is that these folks already have endured enough,” he said. “So anything you can do to avoid sending them from one phone number to another, or one location to another, is necessary.”
The former Human Services building had been closed since the agency relocated last year to the El Paso County Citizens Service Center on Garden of the Gods Road. County officials have spent the last few days opening it up and preparing it for use, Rose said.
As envisioned, people entering the Disaster Recovery Center will go to one of five “intake stations” where their needs will be determined; they’ll then be directed to various agencies, nonprofits and others who will occupy first-floor offices, Rose said.
On Friday morning, county officials were setting up 40 work stations with phones and computers, Rose said; even though the building had been closed, its information technology infrastructure remained intact.
While various county agencies, nonprofits and others will be inside, it’s possible some insurance companies — experienced in responding to such disaster situations — will have recreational vehicles set up in the building’s parking lot where they’ll work with their customers, Rose said.
Among various government agencies and nonprofits that are expected to be represented at the Disaster Recovery Center: El Paso County Public Health, the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department, Colorado Springs Utilities, AspenPointe, El Paso County Veteran Services, Peak Vista Community Health Centers, United Way, Discover Goodwill of Southern and Western Colorado and the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado.
A phone number and website for the recovery center are in the process of being established, Rose said.
