William Murphy, bishop, Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, has launched a special Hurricane Sandy relief effort to assist those who have been left without basic provisions in the wake of the devastating storm. There is an urgent need for the following items. These provisions include: • all non-perishable foods • hand sanitizers • bottled water • diapers and baby wipes • basic toiletries and toilet paper • warm clothing and blankets • batteries, can openers, flashlights and towels Those who are able are asked to bring these provisions as soon as possible to any parish in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and they will be then delivered to the areas that need them. Those who are able to secure supplies from large distributors outside the Long Island area who were unaffected by Hurricane Sandy, may contact the Diocesan Hurricane Sandy Line (516-678-5800, ext. 555). Catholic Charities of Rockville Centre has indicated they may need additional support from CCUSA. This request will not be officially made until damage assessments are done on Wednesday and Thursday. Catholic Charities Rockville Centre is running a Special Needs Shelter (30 occupants on Tuesday, peaking at 100 occupants) out of a local Catholic High School in conjunction with Nassau County government and Medical Reserve Corps. A food pantry that doubled as home to the WIC program run by Catholic Charities is gone (water toppled the walk-in refrigerator). Meals-on-Wheels program run by Catholic Charities will be back up and running today. Catholic Charities Rockville Centre will be assessing damage today before determining whether a CCUSA team is needed to deploy. Catholic Charities of Albany participated on the CCUSA coordination call on October 26th and on October 30th. Damage seems to be minimal in upstate New York. Most of the damage is in New York City and Long Island. CC-Albany is contacting local partners to coordinate and share any unmet needs requests. 5 Catholic Charities of Brooklyn – Queens closed all operations but the 24-hour programs: residential, meals-on-wheels, and nursing homes. Those continued their services, albeit with challenges from Sandy, such as power outages. As of Tuesday, the affiliated nursing home in Coney Island which was told to stay put on Monday (when they reported having a generator) is now concerned that their generator may not be adequate after all. They are trying to see what they can do to get their power back up - but the electric company's list is long; the nursing home is on the priority list. A DASC will be activated.
