The City of Edmonton is providing support to Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo as the area is ravaged by wildfire and the residents are forced to evacuate.
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services has sent firefighters, equipment and vehicles to help fight the wildfires. Edmonton Transit, the City’s Fleet Services and other special services are also assisting in the effort.
In Edmonton, the City’s Emergency Support Response Team has established a Reception Centre for evacuees, and is providing a range of services and supplies.
Edmontonians have demonstrated a spirit of caring, unparalleled in the world. Citizens are going above and beyond to offer help. The City invites people to provide assistance where it is most needed.
Fire Fighting Support
The City continues to provide support to the Fort McMurray firefighting efforts with approximately 36 personnel from Edmonton Fire Rescue Services plus mechanic and transit support.
City of Edmonton Reception Centre
The City of Edmonton's Emergency Support Response Team opened a temporary reception centre for evacuees from Fort McMurray who are in need of accommodation. The City of Edmonton Reception Centre is at Northlands, Expo Centre. The City is providing clothing, toiletries, diapers and formula, food, lodging and lodging services, and counseling services. Animal Care is on site to care for pets. City of Edmonton IT is setting up laptops and iPads at the centre so evacuees can connect with family and loved ones. The City is also making social workers available to help the people traumatized by the fire and their need to flee their homes. Red Cross is also on site to provide other kinds of assistance people may need. Other agencies and groups are starting to offer assistance as well - including food, clothing, shelter.
As of 9am Monday, May 16, 18,000 people have visited the Reception Centre, 15,097 people have registered their information and 200 people are being lodged at the centre. The capacity of the City of Edmonton Reception Centre is more than 5,000.
Many people are checking in and then going to other accommodations to stay with friends and family, or hotels.
There is space available at Northlands and other locations, if we need to accommodate more people.

Route 747 is available for free one-way travel from the airport to Century Park.
Free ETS bus passes
Free admission to recreation centres and some major City attractions
Coordination of donations from cities across the country
Liaison and information-sharing with eight other concerned Alberta municipalities
Liaison with partner agencies, including Red Cross and Edmonton Emergency Relief Services
