Food Banks vs. Food Pantries
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!

* FOOD BANKS *

Food Banks are typically warehouses that are community supported 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations that collect donated surplus and salvageable food locally, as well as food purchased at wholesale, salvage and co-op prices. Food banks distribute emergency food to partnered agencies (such as churches, senior centers, food pantries, school programs, shelters, rehabilitation centers, direct feeding programs, etc.). They often sponsor food programs (ie. Kids Café,& Brown Paper Bag, etc.), and are affiliated with organizations like Americas Second Harvest (for example). Most Food Banks DO NOT SERVE THE PUBLIC DIRECTLY, unless they also have a "Food Pantry" operation onsite.

* FOOD PANTRIES *

Food Pantries are places that give food directly to people in need. Most food pantries are small and operated by churches or non-profit organizations that serve their community. They each make their own rules about who can be served. Many food pantries only serve people who live in the area to the food pantry. Many that are part of the Second Harvest program have strict requirements on who they can serve. They often require some kind of identification (ID, birth certificate of children, proof of address) and proof that you are low income. Most food pantries only serve people once a week, once a month, or on some other limited basis.
