Notes:
The Family Lighthouse is a safe haven for homeless families and single women. It can accommodate a maximum of 72 guests in 16 rooms. Because of the constant need, we are currently expanding our existing shelter with a 4,000 square foot building with 15 rooms. Construction will be complete by June 2006.
Connie Garcia, Director of the Family Lighthouse, says that one of the biggest misconceptions about the homeless is that they are all men. It is a sad fact that many women and children are also without a place to call “home”. The Family Lighthouse at Faith City Ministries is a ministry to temporarily house single women and families who have found themselves without a place to live.
The Family Lighthouse was designed to comfortably house fifty persons but often has as many as seventy people under its roof. All meals are provided for the guests living in the Shelter and all guests are encouraged to attend one of our daily chapel services.
There is a 30-day limit to stay in the Lighthouse, which can be extended to 45 days if the guest finds a job. Guests can return after 30 days, but are allowed only two visits per year. Mothers with small children or those who are ill may remain in the facility during the day; all others are required to be out of the Lighthouse between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on job searches.
Children are a constant fixture at the Family Lighthouse; the halls are always ringing with the sounds of laughing, squealing kids. Faith City Ministries has an excellent working relationship with the Amarillo Independent School District. Children are enrolled in nearby schools or can be bussed to the school they attended before coming to the Lighthouse.
If women living in the Lighthouse desire help in overcoming abusive pasts or addictions, they are encouraged to enroll in the “Hope for Women” Program. This is a 12-month commitment during which time the women will be allowed to live in the Lighthouse.
