The result was the opening of Somerville’s first and only shelter for homeless adults and the formation of the Somerville Homeless Coalition, Inc. Today we operate two shelters, a food pantry, case management program and several housing programs. Come learn more about the programs and services we offer and new initiatives we are taking to address the issues of homelessness. Our target population is the homeless and the poor of Somerville and the surrounding towns that do not offer the services we provide. Last year we served over 300 in our case management and housing programs and over 1,500 in our food pantries with Project SOUP. The typical homeless family we see is a mother with two children. Many of these families receive welfare benefits, although some are working parents whose income is still so low they are in poverty. The Somerville area's homeless population is quite diverse, and our range of shelters and services responds to this diverse constituency. We serve elders, single working adults, disabled individuals, and many families with children from newborns to teenagers.
