As Hurricane Sandy blasts its way north from the Caribbean, where it claimed more than five dozen lives, AmeriCares stands prepared to rush emergency aid and, if needed, deploy relief workers to areas hardest hit by the oncoming storm.
Our U.S. and ER teams have reached out to 130 response partners in several states to assess potential needs and will be in continued contact as the storm progresses. In the meantime, our stock of targeted medicines and supplies is positioned for immediate shipment, with special focus on chronic care meds, first aid, water, family emergency kits, and other relief supplies.
“This storm is going to affect the densely populated Eastern seaboard, and is likely to cause significant damage to homes and businesses and disrupt transportation systems,” said Garrett Ingoglia, AmeriCares vice president of emergency response. “This is going to be a very serious storm, and we are ready to help in any way we can.”
The monstrous, Category 1 storm is predicted to make landfall on the mid-Atlantic shore on Monday, October 29, merging with a powerful cold front as it pounds its way northward and inland. Damaging 60-80 mph winds, torrential rains, dangerous storm surges, flooding, heavy snow in higher elevations and widespread power failures are expected. Officials estimate that the slow-moving system could affect 50-60 million people from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.
A state of emergency has been declared in 8 states, and mass evacuations ordered in many coastal areas. The New York City mass transit and subway system are closing at 7:00 pm October 28 in anticipation of the storm's wrath.
In Haiti, where the storm caused severe flooding this week, AmeriCares responded swiftly with deliveries of cholera treatment and prevention supplies. The Haiti team also prepared hundreds of family emergency kits with disinfectants, cleaning products and first aid supplies, and replenished a dwindling stock of emergency medicines at a major hospital in Port-au-Prince.
Support AmeriCares relief efforts as we prepare for and continue to respond to Hurricane Sandy.

Medicines and Emergency Aid Rushed to Joplin
Shipments to Partner Clinics Address Shattered City’s “Urgent Need.”
May 27, 2011
Amid the ruins that were once the heart of Joplin, MO, and in the shadow of what remains of St. John's Medical Center, AmeriCares tornado relief efforts are fully mobilized.
A rush shipment of medicines and supplies already arrived, with more deliveries due at clinics and shelters to help survivors of the devastating May 22 tornado that claimed 125 lives, injured 750, and destroyed 2,000 buildings.
On May 24, emergency response expert, Jessica Ginger, met with partner clinics now serving as triage centers in the impact zone and identified chronic care medications, pain relievers, antibiotics, rescue inhalers and tetanus vaccine as urgent needs. Bottled water, blankets and hygiene items are also in short supply.
Immediate Response:
To quickly meet these critical needs and help doctors continue to care for survivors, AmeriCares delivered the first emergency shipment of medicines and supplies on May 26, with two more arriving May 27-28, totaling $177,000 in medical aid for the Community Clinic of Joplin and Access Family Care. The shipments contain:
* Rescue inhalers for 468 patients with asthma
* Antibiotics to treat 387 people with upper respiratory infections
* One month of treatment for 160 patients with hypertension
* Sutures for 288 procedures
* 1,800 tubes of antibiotic ointment and antiseptic solution for wound care along with medicine to manage chronic pain for 18 patients
* 80 hand and wrist wraps for people with arthritis
Two trucks carrying of 64,000 bottles of water supplied by Nestle Water North America will arrive in May 28 for rescue workers and affected families.
AmeriCares is also working with its committed corporate partners on targeted donations of insulin for diabetics and tetanus vaccine. Clinic doctors, nurses and staff who survived the deadly twister are determined to care for both uninsured patients who rely on their services and the many victims of the monumental disaster. There is growing concern that people who have lost their livelihoods will lose their insurance, placing a steep rise in demand on Joplin’s safety net clinics.
“We’ll be focusing on Joplin’s relief needs today, but we know they are going to need additional help in the coming months as these clinics will be caring for more people in the long wake of the disaster.” explained Ella Gudwin, AmeriCares VP for Emergency Response.

AmeriCares responded immediately and has since launched a prolonged tornado relief operation, including deliveries of more than $1.2 million in medicines, humanitarian aid for 13 clinics and water to shelters and evacuee resource centers through 10 food banks and the Salvation Army. -> FROM THE SITE 10/28/12 (LTEL):

From their website:
From where do our relief supplies come?
AmeriCares receives donations of medicines, medical supplies
and other relief materials from some of the nation's most
highly respected pharmaceutical companies as well as other
corporations. Two warehouses, one each in the U.S. and Europe,
store materials and make them available for immediate shipment.
The warehouses are constantly being restocked with products
that are continually shipped by sea and by air around the world.
Corporate Partners
* Abbott Laboratories. One of our most loyal supporters, Abbott
has generously donated over $400 million of product to AmeriCares,
providing life saving aid to people in over 100 countries.
* AmerisourceBergen In the aftermath of the tsunami
AmerisourceBergen mobilized its 14,000 employees across the country
and from 17 AmerisourceBergen warehouses throughout the U.S,
donated more than $1 million worth of antibiotics, antivirals
and antimalarials to AmeriCares.
* AstraZeneca is donating medicines. Following Katrina, many
survivors in the Gulf Coast area with chronic health problems
had difficulties accessing their prescriptions or refilling
their medications.
* Becton, Dickinson & Company...syringes and needles.
* Bristol-Myers Squibb, BMS has provided AmeriCares with more
than $200 million of critical medicines for over 60 countries.
* Esprit Pharma focuses on specialty therapeutics for both
urology and women's health care. The company's first donation
consists of an important and useful antibiotic, ProQuin? XR
that has a unique delivery of ciprofloxacin.
* Henry Schein, Inc. Medical Supplies
* Nestl頗aters North America. When devastating hurricanes
hit the U.S. Gulf Coast in August and again in September 2005,
AmeriCares turned to Nestl頠Waters with urgent requests.
Nestl頗aters?s contributions of Bottled Water, valued at more
than $38,000, helped AmeriCares bring vital relief to survivors
in the affected areas.
When a disaster strikes, AmeriCares relief experts assemble a
needs list from the affected area. That list is matched against
the warehouse inventory and if further provisions are needed,
staff members contact corporate donors for the additional
supplies. Over the years, more than 1,000 corporate donors
have partnered with AmeriCares to provide life-saving aid in
the form of medicines, vitamins, surgical and hospital equipment,
blankets, milk products, food, disaster relief supplies, water
purifiers, tents, vaccines and diapers.
AmeriCares places a huge premium on accurately monitoring the
distribution of all of our shipments. We have the know-how and
expertise to respond responsibly and efficiently to all disasters.
Strong relationships are maintained with highly capable and
qualified people and organizations in countries around the world
that provide accurate information and effective logistical
support. There is continual contact with indigenous health care
providers in many countries to ensure that the relief supplies
are used responsibly. Over the years, invaluable experience has
been gained in moving large quantities of medicine safely to areas
where transportation is poor and the political situation unstable.
Our world-renowned reputation for accountability has long since
earned the confidence of the pharmaceutical and medical supply
industries, in addition to our many financial supporters.
AmeriCares is consistently one of the first humanitarian
organizations to respond to worldwide disasters with urgently
needed medical supplies. Our ability to respond quickly would
not be possible without the generous contributions, both financial
and in-kind, of many donors, especially our corporate partners.
The AmeriCares humanitarian lifeline to the world extends across
the globe every day. It also touches lives in the United States,
reaching out to the uninsured through AmeriCares Free Clinics; to
those in need of home repair through AmeriCares HomeFront; and to
children infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS, through Camp
AmeriKids.
It is the compassionate concern shown by all in the AmeriCares
community?employees, financial and in-kind donors, local partners
and thousands of committed volunteers?that enables AmeriCares to
help millions of people around the world.
AmeriCares is an international relief organization whose passion
to help is matched by an ability to deliver. Whether it's an epic
disaster or a daily struggle, AmeriCares goes to extraordinary
lengths to ensure that medicines, medical supplies and aid reaches
individuals in need wherever they are, whenever they need it.
In a quarter of a century, we have delivered more than $6 billion
of aid to 137 countries.
AmeriCares is an I.R.S. registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt
organization.
The AmeriCares Model
For over two decades, the success of AmeriCares has been
characterized by timely response, meaningful impact, high integrity
and intense passion for the work. To deliver medicine, relief
supplies and health care to the needy, AmeriCares has developed a
platform based on strategic partnerships, high-efficiency and
tight auditing procedures.
Since its founding, AmeriCares has provided more than $6 billion
of aid to 137 countries. To accomplish these results, AmeriCares
assembles product donations from the private sector, determines
the most urgent needs and solicits the funding to send the aid
via airlift or ocean cargo to health and welfare professionals
in the indigent locations.
On the ground, AmeriCares works with international and local
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's), hospitals, health networks
and government ministries of long-standing effectiveness such as
the Order of Malta, Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity,
Adventist Development and Relief Agency International, HOPE
Worldwide, Project Mercy, Centres pour le D鶥loppement et la
Sant頡nd Help The Afghan Children.
Two warehouses, one each in the U.S. and Europe, serve as assembly
centers for inventory.
In some instances, where products such as medicines or medical
supplies are not available through conventional channels and the
need is critical, AmeriCares applies funds for direct purchases.
Uncompromising security procedures assure that the assistance is
distributed to the designated beneficiaries and not diverted-for
example, all-inclusive tracking of medicine by lot number and
thorough follow-ups.
The model is time-tested, cost-effective and experience-driven.
Historically, auditing discloses that each $100 in cash
contributions enables AmeriCares to deliver more than $3,000 in
emergency relief, including medicines, medical supplies,
clothing, footwear, blankets and nutritional supplements. -> Medicines and Emergency Aid Rushed to Joplin
* Sutures for 288 procedures
$1.2 Million in 2011 U.S. Tornado Relief
Meanwhile AmeriCares recovery efforts continue in the South after late April tornadoes ripped through Alabama, Mississippi, and five other states, killing 350, crushing entire neighborhoods, and displacing tens of thousands. AmeriCares responded immediately and has since launched a prolonged tornado relief operation, including deliveries of more than $1.2 million in medicines, humanitarian aid for 13 clinics and water to shelters and evacuee resource centers through 10 food banks and the Salvation Army.

AmeriKids.
It is the compassionate concern shown by all in the AmeriCares
communityemployees, financial and in-kind donors, local partners
and thousands of committed volunteersthat enables AmeriCares to
help millions of people around the world.
Worldwide, Project Mercy, Centres pour le Dveloppement et la
Sant and Help The Afghan Children.

The AmeriCares Model
For over two decades, the success of AmeriCares has been characterized by timely response, meaningful impact, high integrity and intense passion for the work. To deliver medicine, relief supplies and health care to the needy, AmeriCares has developed a platform based on strategic partnerships, high-efficiency and tight auditing procedures.
Since its founding, AmeriCares has provided more than $6 billion of aid to 137 countries. To accomplish these results, AmeriCares assembles product donations from the private sector, determines the most urgent needs and solicits the funding to send the aid via airlift or ocean cargo to health and welfare professionals in the indigent locations.
On the ground, AmeriCares works with international and local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's), hospitals, health networks and government ministries of long-standing effectiveness such as the Order of Malta, Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, Adventist Development and Relief Agency International, HOPE Worldwide, Project Mercy, Centres pour le Dveloppement et la Sant and Help The Afghan Children.
Two warehouses, one each in the U.S. and Europe, serve as assembly centers for inventory.
In some instances, where products such as medicines or medical supplies are not available through conventional channels and the need is critical, AmeriCares applies funds for direct purchases.
Uncompromising security procedures assure that the assistance is distributed to the designated beneficiaries and not diverted-for example, all-inclusive tracking of medicine by lot number and thorough follow-ups.
The model is time-tested, cost-effective and experience-driven. Historically, auditing discloses that each $100 in cash contributions enables AmeriCares to deliver more than $3,000 in emergency relief, including medicines, medical supplies, clothing, footwear, blankets and nutritional supplements.

From where do our relief supplies come?
AmeriCares receives donations of medicines, medical supplies and other relief materials from some of the nation's most highly respected pharmaceutical companies as well as other corporations. Two warehouses, one each in the U.S. and Europe, store materials and make them available for immediate shipment. The warehouses are constantly being restocked with products that are continually shipped by sea and by air around the world.

When a disaster strikes, AmeriCares relief experts assemble a needs list from the affected area. That list is matched against the warehouse inventory and if further provisions are needed, staff members contact corporate donors for the additional supplies. Over the years, more than 1,000 corporate donors have partnered with AmeriCares to provide life-saving aid in the form of medicines, vitamins, surgical and hospital equipment, blankets, milk products, food, disaster relief supplies, water purifiers, tents, vaccines and diapers.
AmeriCares places a huge premium on accurately monitoring the distribution of all of our shipments. We have the know-how and expertise to respond responsibly and efficiently to all disasters. Strong relationships are maintained with highly capable and qualified people and organizations in countries around the world that provide accurate information and effective logistical support. There is continual contact with indigenous health care providers in many countries to ensure that the relief supplies are used responsibly. Over the years, invaluable experience has been gained in moving large quantities of medicine safely to areas where transportation is poor and the political situation unstable. Our world-renowned reputation for accountability has long since earned the confidence of the pharmaceutical and medical supply industries, in addition to our many financial supporters. < back to top
AmeriCares is consistently one of the first humanitarian organizations to respond to worldwide disasters with urgently needed medical supplies. Our ability to respond quickly would not be possible without the generous contributions, both financial and in-kind, of many donors, especially our corporate partners.
