Gulfport is cracking down on people who steal copper, bronze and other
precious metals.
The city just passed an ordinance, requiring anyone who wants to sell
the metals for recycling, to get a license. The cost is $20 a year.
Companies that deal with the metals can use their business license
instead, but must designate certain employees to turn in the materials.
The mayor says metal thefts have really hurt the recovery across South
Mississippi.
"Because when people are having their homes, the pipes and wires ripped
out of their homes as we're trying to recover, it's not fair. And you
come in and there's been $10,000 worth of damage done, when we're
struggling to pay for every nickle's worth of recovery as we can, it's
just not fair for the citizens to have to deal with this." Mayor Brent

White House threatens to veto national wind insurance plan
By Ana Radelat
Clarion-Ledger Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON A wind insurance plan proposed by 4th District Rep.
Gene Taylor and championed by Democratic House leaders came under a
White House veto threat Wednesday.
Taylor's proposal, embodied in a flood insurance reform bill the House
plans to vote on today, would add wind coverage to the National Flood
Insurance Program. That would allow homeowners who want to buy insurance
against windstorm damage to purchase it with their flood policies.
But the Office of Management and Budget said shifting liabilities for
windstorm damage from private insurers to the flood insurance program
would be "fiscally irresponsible."
The federal government subsidizes flood insurance policies to offer
homeowners in coastal and other flood-prone regions affordable
insurance. Congress established the program in 1968.
But the OMB policy statement released Wednesday said adding wind
coverage to flood insurance "would encourage individuals to task on
risks that are inappropriate, putting themselves in harm's way because
they would not have to bear the full costs of any subsequent damages."
It also said all taxpayers "would be subsidizing insurance rates for the
benefit of people in those high-risk areas."

Gene Taylor went on to defend his bill.
This will be interesting. But, regardless, it gets the issue of Katrina
back in the National press for further discussion on what the current
status is and what the issues are down here.

The Earth Institute at Columbia University is trying to gather the most
accurate list possible of Hurricane Katrina victims. To do so, anyone
who had a relative or close friend who died from Katrina-related causes
is encouraged to contact the institute and share their story.
Victims need not have died Aug. 29, 2005. Maybe they died in a car
accident while evacuating, or maybe it happened in the days or weeks
afterward from heart attack, stress, suicide or a lack of medication.

Warr said.
The new ordinance does not affect aluminum cans.

White House threatens to veto national wind insurance plan
By Ana Radelat
Clarion-Ledger Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON — A wind insurance plan proposed by 4th District Rep.
You can to read the entire article on this link.

09270383/1001/news>
Gene Taylor went on to defend his bill.
This will be interesting. But, regardless, it gets the issue of Katrina
back in the National press for further discussion on what the current
status is and what the issues are down here.

Actually, there is GREAT scientific disagreement about
what you say about sea level. By most legitimate
scientific accounts, about a foot over the course of the
next century is closer to the reality (not any different
than the last century or the one before that).

FEMA officials have extended the deadline to demolish and remove
derelict properties in Hancock County, and more than 300 of them are
being eyed for the wrecking ball...........................It's a
fast-track project: property owners will be notified by mail,
condemnation hearings held and the removal s completed by Dec. 31, 2007.

The Corp of Engineers has announced a buy out plans for large parcels
of BSL, Waveland and Perlington. The proposal creates an enormous green
belt while eliminating 41,000 homes.

Follow the Sea Coast Echo for followups.
Why on earth didnt they propose this two years ago BEFORE we slugged it
out building and rebuilding all these homes?
The Hancock Chamber <http://www.sunherald.com/201/story/127860.html> of
Commerce is blatantly paying for happy articles- they want positive
stories out there just not Katrina woes. They are willing to pay a $100
for a "positive story" published in the media outside the
region. The The Gulf Coast Business Council

sent out an email asking its members to contribute to the anniversary
report in a positive manner.

More foreclosures likely
By ANA RADELAT
The protection Hurricane Katrina victim Julie Martin and hundreds of
other Mississippians have had from foreclosures on their homes is about
to end.
That law, which requires landowners to pay a reasonable "carrying
charge" rather than the full mortgage payment, will expire Oct. 4,
making Martin and thousands of other Mississippians vulnerable to home
and business foreclosures.
