Doctors of the World Japan is the only member of the Doctors of the World network with headquarters in Asia. This branch was founded in 1995 after providing help to the Kobe earthquake victims. Doctors of the World Japan, license as a “Certified NPO Organization”, is one of the few organizations in Japan offering tax deductions to its donors.

As the Doctors of the World emotional and psychological care team helps in the relief effort, it is learning of the realities being faced by those in the evacuation centers.

Tohoku Pacific Earthquake: Report 1 on Medical Activities on the ground (8th April)
A team of 8 medical Doctors of the World staff made up of psychiatrists, nurses and relaxation therapy experts specializing in emotional and psychological care has been visiting refuge shelters and private homes in Ohtsuchi, Iwate Prefecture.

After consulting with the health authorities of Iwate Prefecture, Doctors of the World Japan has decided to launch a mental and basic healthcare project in the city of Otsuchi affected by the tsunami on March 11.
A logistician and two psychiatrists left Tokyo today to evaluate the needs in the area before starting consultations in shelters, hospitals and homes on April 4.

Doctors of the World Japan has now approved relief efforts for those affected by the disaster including psychological support at evacuation shelters, in homes, in hospitals etc, as well as basic medical care.
