In the first year, the Food Bank provided 203,000 pounds of food and groceries to 40 agencies on a budget of only $50,000. In 1996, addition of the El Paso area brought the service area to a total of 22 counties. Since 2005, the Food Bank has annually distributed more than 5 million pounds of food to nonprofit partner agencies. West Texas Food Bank has an mission to increase public awareness on issues of hunger. This focus is multi-faceted. Increased donations of food and dollars so as to continue the service to agencies and their clients is one benefit of public awareness, but providing nutrition education and assisting our agencies in distribution of nutritious food is also part of that awareness, as is the need to inform those needing assistance that help is available in West Texas. A member in good standing of America’s Second Harvest–The Nation’s Food Bank Network and the Texas Food Bank Network, West Texas Food Bank receives guidance in the form of operating standards, training, inspection, and food supply information. Additionally, The Food Bank is appointed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Federal Emergency Management Administration to provide emergency and disaster food assistance throughout West Texas and to assist other regions as needed in these types of emergencies.
