Lutheran Services in Iowa serves as the local affiliate for Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) in Iowa. LDR and LSI have a long history of partnering in disaster response and preparedness. Lutheran Services in Iowa establishes program to provide aid and support to storm victims
Waverly, Iowa –Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) mobilized a disaster response program today to provide services on a long-term basis to victims of recent storms in northeastern Iowa.
Designed to address the unmet needs of residents impacted by the storms, this is a program that supports the community long after the cleanup phase is completed. In addition to support from an assigned case advocate, typical assistance may include purchasing a bed or other household items, paying an insurance deductible, paying a utility bill, or addressing a wide range of uninsured or underinsured financial losses.
LSI serves as the local affiliate for Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) in Iowa, which is a cooperative ministry of the three Iowa synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Iowa districts of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. The joint ministry provides efficient use of resources when responding to federally declared disasters in Iowa.
“The efforts of LSI as the LDR affiliate are intended to enhance community, state and federal relief efforts. The unique component of this program is that we’re in it for the long haul. Our expertise is assessing and addressing the long-term needs after initial emergency services responders have completed their work,” said Doug Johnson, president and CEO of LSI. “We provide services when needs exceed resources.”
LSI’s Pastor Michael Stadie, the Lutheran Disaster Response coordinator for Iowa, will work with a group of community leaders to establish local needs and priorities. LSI will coordinate a network of case advocates who will walk with families and individuals through the process of recovery, which according to Stadie, is typically at least a year. Case advocates will help residents with a wide range of activities, from assessing needs to filing paperwork or coordinating direct financial assistance.
LSI is currently seeking donations to address the extraordinary needs in the northeastern Iowa communities.
