The existing dispensary was basically a two-roomed (both approximately 10-foot by 10-foot each) concrete building. Not much space for Madam Marcel Garson to utilize for the medical needs of the area. Several of the doctors that had already been to Pendus met with Father Cha Cha and “drew” up plans on a napkin during his visit to Lafayette in August 2001. Those plans were the springboard for what was finally built. Construction began in the fall of 2001. Named “The Dispensary of St Mary of the Immaculate Conception” it was formally dedicated during the March 2002 group’s visit. This building has a large waiting room, two examination rooms, a birthing room, a pharmacy, an office/records room, an overnight room, a storage room and a small indoor bathroom. On the wall of the birthing room, local artist Jean Saul painted a beautiful new-born baby lying on a bed with the Holy Spirit (in the form of a dove) above it. He also painted the words which translate to “This is my little one whom I love, in him I find my pleasure.” The dispensary sits on a two-acre plot located just east of the church complex, downhill toward the Pendus River. It is surrounded by an eight-foot high concrete block fence with barbed wire on top (to keep out any potential intruders). The courtyard area in front of the dispensary is shaded by a huge 100-year old tree, whose branches form an umbrella over most of the courtyard area. There also is a small “out-building” which can be used as either a guardhouse or a place for any doctors who come for extended stays in Pendus. There also is a cistern behind the dispensary to collect rain water from the roof.
