Catholic Charities To Provide Meals For Waldo Canyon Fire Evacuees
June 26th, 2012
Catholic Charities has been asked by the Salvation Army in Colorado Springs and the Red Cross in Divide to begin providing daily breakfast for the Waldo Canyon Fire evacuees at Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner for the evacuees at Summit Elementary School in Divide, Colorado. Meal service will begin Wednesday, June 27 and will continue until evacuees are allowed to return to their homes.
“Providing meals for the evacuees will require Catholic Charities’ Marian House to prepare about 450 meals more per day. This will be in addition to the 600+ noon time meals we already provide on a daily basis,” said Mark Rohlena, President & CEO of Catholic Charities. “We are pleased to be able to help in this way to make life a little easier for those who have been displaced by this disaster in our community. We ask that everyone continues to pray for those battling this fire, as well as those who are displaced or in harms way.”
To deliver an additional 450 meals per day, Catholic Charities is asking the community for help. The following items are needed:
Monetary donations
In-kind donations
Sliced fruit (fruit trays)
Frozen Potatoes: hash browns or tater tots
Boxes Frozen waffles or frozen pancakes
Breakfast pastries
Cereal
Butter/margarine
Syrup
Oatmeal
Disposable Aluminum pans – 9 x 13 or larger
Heavy duty / industrial Aluminum foil
Sugar, creamer, condiment packets (mayo, mustard, ketchup), salt & pepper packets
Paper Products to include: Plates, napkins, coffee cups, bowls, and forks, knives, and spoons (restaurant packs would be ideal)
Volunteers to help prepare meals –Call Doug at 719-866-6286 to volunteer
12:00 pm – 4:00 pm to help with daily pre-preparation of meals
Donations can be dropped off at the Marian House, 14 West Bijou Street (west side of building at the dock), from 7:00 am – 2:00 pm.
To make a donation on-line, go to www.ccharitiescc.org and click on the donate button. Once there, please specify Waldo Canyon Fire / Disaster Relief on the donation form.
We want to thank Care & Share for providing cartons of eggs and breakfast meats for the meal preparation. They will be delivering the needed items to the Marian House each day.
All food preparation for the Cheyenne Mountain High School shelter will take place at Marian House and be transported to the shelter. At this time, it is unclear if Catholic Charities will be preparing food at their 14 West Bijou location for the evacuees in Divide, or if food will be transported to be prepared at Summit Elementary. Catholic Charities is working to get access to Highway 24 for the purpose of providing this service to those evacuees in Divide.
