Instead of hiring a person to meet with a need family and give them a list of other originations to go to for help.who then send them off to other organizations because they have no actual funds to disburse, we work directly with the needy family and pay overdue light bills, purchase car seats, cribs, food, medicine. We respond to the exact needs of the individual families who come to us. Most of these families are referred to us by the local Dept. of Human Services, Health Dept., and other agencies so we concentrate on serving the needy, not the greedy. That is ten years to the day we first opened the shelter. We have already had kids in ....but our live in house parents are still getting certified so the social services has been bringing kids to the home when they get picked up to clean them up and feed them and let them stay there instead of sitting in their offices. As to need...we have all of our short term needs met. We are now in the phase of needing plain ole cash support to pay for operating expenses...or wal mart gift cards. We have very little storage compared to before as we have let the local food pantry use our 2,000 square foot building next to us. I could use three office type desk and two filing cabinets... for the temp office we are trying to set up....and the biggest thing we have left is a new swing set for the play area. Sent to me on 4/5 Hope Haven is located in Diamondhead, MS. Diamondhead is an area of Hancock County. Update on Shelter: Our home, offices. Recreation building and storage buildings took an average of five feet of water from the storm. Everything inside the all of our buildings were a total loss. We were able to salvage some records and one file cabinet and two chairs...but that was all. All told we estimate that we lost close to$100,000 in furnishings, equipment and supplies and sustained almost $50,000 in damage to the structures. Like so many others...we had no flood insurance and as almost all of our damage was caused by flooding, not wind...we will not receive anything from the Insurance company. An even greater loss was our loss of our trained staff. Of the 12 full and part time employees of Hope Haven, I am the only one who has a house left to live in. All of the rest lost their homes and all of their belongings and five of them lost their vehicles. Nine of our 12 board members lost their homes and belongings or had their homes severely damaged. Most of our staff have left the local area and six of our Board members were forced to move elsewhere for the immediate future. Even if we could get them back...they have no place to live as over 85% of the homes in this area were destroyed or are uninhabitable. When I spoke with Terry yesterday, he mentioned that Hope Haven is the only shelter in the state of MS that is willing to take pregnant teens and children in wheel chairs. The children in wheel chairs must be placed in nursing homes if HH is unable to take them. How heart breaking is this?! He is hoping to reopen as a shelter in April or May. That is ten years to the day we first opened the shelter. We have already had kids in ....but our live in house parents are still getting certified so the social services has been bringing kids to the home when they get picked up to clean them up and feed them and let them stay there instead of sitting in their offices. As to need...we have all of our short term needs met. We are now in the phase of needing plain ole cash support to pay for operating expenses...or wal mart gift cards. We have very little storage compared to before as we have let the local food pantry use our 2,000 square foot building next to us. I could use three office type desk and two filing cabinets... for the temp office we are trying to set up....and the biggest thing we have left is a new swing set for the play area. Recreation building and storage buildings took an average of five feet of water from the storm. Everything inside the all of our buildings were a total loss. All told we estimate that we lost close to$100,000 in furnishings, equipment and supplies and sustained almost $50,000 in damage to the structures. Like so many others...we had no flood insurance and as almost all of our damage was caused by flooding, not wind...we will not receive anything from the Insurance company. An even greater loss was our loss of our trained staff. Of the 12 full and part time employees of Hope Haven, I am the only one who has a house left to live in. All of the rest lost their homes and all of their belongings and five of them lost their vehicles. Nine of our 12 board members lost their homes and belongings or had their homes severely damaged. Most of our staff have left the local area and six of our Board members were forced to move elsewhere for the immediate future. Even if we could get them back...they have no place to live as over 85% of the homes in this area were destroyed or are uninhabitable. When I spoke with Terry yesterday, he mentioned that Hope Haven is the only shelter in the state of MS that is willing to take pregnant teens and children in wheel chairs. That is ten years to the day we first opened the shelter. We have already had kids in ....but our live in house parents are still getting certified so the social services has been bringing kids to the home when they get picked up to clean them up and feed them and let them stay there instead of sitting in their offices. As to need...we have all of our short term needs met. We are now in the phase of needing plain ole cash support to pay for operating expenses...or wal mart gift cards. We have very little storage compared to before as we have let the local food pantry use our 2,000 square foot building next to us. I could use three office type desk and two filing cabinets... for the temp office we are trying to set up....and the biggest thing we have left is a new swing set for the play area. Recreation building and storage buildings took an average of five feet of water from the storm. Everything inside the all of our buildings were a total loss. All told we estimate that we lost close to$100,000 in furnishings, equipment and supplies and sustained almost $50,000 in damage to the structures. Like so many others...we had no flood insurance and as almost all of our damage was caused by flooding, not wind...we will not receive anything from the Insurance company. An even greater loss was our loss of our trained staff. Of the 12 full and part time employees of Hope Haven, I am the only one who has a house left to live in. All of the rest lost their homes and all of their belongings and five of them lost their vehicles. Nine of our 12 board members lost their homes and belongings or had their homes severely damaged. Most of our staff have left the local area and six of our Board members were forced to move elsewhere for the immediate future. This program is designed to provide real immediate help to families with children in crises. Many different organizations have established counseling and .case management. programs to help people recover, but few of them actually have any funds to give to the families for needed items. We are different. Instead of hiring a person to meet with a need family and give them a list of other originations to go to for help.who then send them off to other organizations because they have no actual funds to disburse, we work directly with the needy family and pay overdue light bills, purchase car seats, cribs, food, medicine. We respond to the exact needs of the individual families who come to us. Most of these families are referred to us by the local Dept. of Human Services, Health Dept., and other agencies so we concentrate on serving the needy, not the greedy. Some cases involve situations where the children are in danger of being taken into care because of the living conditions and the financial situation of the families and we are pleased to provide these families the short term help they need so they don't lose their children. That is ten years to the day we first opened the shelter. We have already had kids in ....but our live in house parents are still getting certified so the social services has been bringing kids to the home when they get picked up to clean them up and feed them and let them stay there instead of sitting in their offices. As to need...we have all of our short term needs met. We are now in the phase of needing plain ole cash support to pay for operating expenses...or wal mart gift cards. We have very little storage compared to before as we have let the local food pantry use our 2,000 square foot building next to us. I could use three office type desk and two filing cabinets... for the temp office we are trying to set up....and the biggest thing we have left is a new swing set for the play area. Recreation building and storage buildings took an average of five feet of water from the storm. Everything inside the all of our buildings were a total loss. We were able to salvage some records and one file cabinet and two chairs...but that was all. All told we estimate that we lost close to$100,000 in furnishings, equipment and supplies and sustained almost $50,000 in damage to the structures. Like so many others...we had no flood insurance and as almost all of our damage was caused by flooding, not wind...we will not receive anything from the Insurance company. An even greater loss was our loss of our trained staff. Of the 12 full and part time employees of Hope Haven, I am the only one who has a house left to live in. All of the rest lost their homes and all of their belongings and five of them lost their vehicles. Nine of our 12 board members lost their homes and belongings or had their homes severely damaged. Most of our staff have left the local area and six of our Board members were forced to move elsewhere for the immediate future. Even if we could get them back...they have no place to live as over 85% of the homes in this area were destroyed or are uninhabitable. When I spoke with Terry yesterday, he mentioned that Hope Haven is the only shelter in the state of MS that is willing to take pregnant teens and children in wheel chairs. The children in wheel chairs must be placed in nursing homes if HH is unable to take them. How heart breaking is this?! He is hoping to reopen as a shelter in April or May. We have already had kids in ....but our live in house parents are still getting certified so the social services has been bringing kids to the home when they get picked up to clean them up and feed them and let them stay there instead of sitting in their offices. As to need...we have all of our short term needs met. We are now in the phase of needing plain ole cash support to pay for operating expenses...or wal mart gift cards. We have very little storage compared to before as we have let the local food pantry use our 2,000 square foot building next to us. I could use three office type desk and two filing cabinets... for the temp office we are trying to set up....and the biggest thing we have left is a new swing set for the play area. As to need...we have all of our short term needs met. We are now in the phase of needing plain ole cash support to pay for operating expenses...or wal mart gift cards. I could use three office type desk and two filing cabinets... for the temp office we are trying to set up....and the biggest thing we have left is a new swing set for the play area. An even greater loss was our loss of our trained staff. Of the 12 full and part time employees of Hope Haven, I am the only one who has a house left to live in. As to need...we have all of our short term needs met. We are now in the phase of needing plain ole cash support to pay for operating expenses...or wal mart gift cards. Like so many others...we had no flood insurance and as almost all of our damage was caused by flooding, not wind...we will not receive anything from the Insurance company. An even greater loss was our loss of our trained staff. Of the 12 full and part time employees of Hope Haven, I am the only one who has a house left to live in. All of the rest lost their homes and all of their belongings and five of them lost their vehicles. Nine of our 12 board members lost their homes and belongings or had their homes severely damaged. Most of our staff have left the local area and six of our Board members were forced to move elsewhere for the immediate future. Even if we could get them back...they have no place to live as over 85% of the homes in this area were destroyed or are uninhabitable. When I spoke with Terry yesterday, he mentioned that Hope Haven is the only shelter in the state of MS that is willing to take pregnant teens and children in wheel chairs. The children in wheel chairs must be placed in nursing homes if HH is unable to take them. How heart breaking is this?! He is hoping to reopen as a shelter in April or May. We have already had kids in ....but our live in house parents are still getting certified so the social services has been bringing kids to the home when they get picked up to clean them up and feed them and let them stay there instead of sitting in their offices. As to need...we have all of our short term needs met. We are now in the phase of needing plain ole cash support to pay for operating expenses...or wal mart gift cards. We have very little storage compared to before as we have let the local food pantry use our 2,000 square foot building next to us. I could use three office type desk and two filing cabinets...for the temp office we are trying to set up....and the biggest thing we have left is a new swing set for the play area.
