Mission: Incorporated in 1983 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Food Bank is a food distribution and support system for more than 100 different direct service, non-profit agencies serving the needy, the ill, the elderly and children. Last year, the Food Bank distributed more than 4 million pounds of food to more than 80 member agencies. This food, valued at more than $6.7 million, fed more than 58,000 people. Emergency food programs provided groceries to about 45,600 people in 2006. Two thirds of the people we serve are either under age 18 or over age 65 - people for whom employment is not an option - the most vulnerable members of our society. Eighty-five percent of the food collected by The Food Bank is distributed to families of the working poor and elderly. Residents of the community constitute 89 percent of agency clients.
Our partner agencies include emergency food pantries and senior meal programs, sliding fee scale day care centers, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, family and domestic violence shelters and various youth programs -- all of which include meals or snacks in the programs or service.
The Food Bank provides direct service to the community with its Kids Café and Children’s Summer Food Program in Washoe County, the Back-Pack Kids Program and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program in Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey and Washoe counties.
Being hungry means more than having no food. Hunger has many causes: unemployment or underemployment; living on a fixed income; insufficient education to obtain a job that pays a living wage; lack of affordable housing and child care; inadequate or no affordable medical insurance.
In serving those who are hungry, we are called to do more than provide food. Our mission also includes advocacy - speaking on behalf of those we serve. The Food Bank lends its voice to speak on behalf of those who have no voice, particularly children and the elderly, who make up two thirds of those we serve. Our campaign to end child hunger is the focus of billboards, transit signs, public speaking and activity at the State Legislature.

The Food Bank operates from a 22,500 sq. ft. office/warehouse facility to distribute more than 4 million pounds of food and support several community food programs with a total team of 28 people. Our service area incorporates 13 Northern Nevada counties and seven counties along the California Sierra.
